Behind the Lens: Branding Session with Joe Mullins & The Radio Ramblers

Some shoots are special from the first shutter click—and this one definitely was.

I recently had the joy of working with legendary banjo player Joe Mullins and his band, The Radio Ramblers, for a branding session tied to their newest gospel album Thankful and Blessed, now out on Billy Blue Records. The moment Joe stepped into the frame with his Gold Tone banjo, I knew we were creating something that honored more than just music—it honored legacy.

Joe Mullins is no stranger to bluegrass fans. As a second-generation musician and longtime broadcaster, he’s spent decades preserving and promoting the sound of traditional bluegrass. With his signature picking style and unmatched drive on the banjo, he’s built a career rooted in authenticity and heart. Whether he’s behind a mic or behind a banjo, there’s a sense that Joe isn’t just playing music—he’s carrying on a heritage.

During our session, we captured a variety of looks for the band, including promotional shots for another album currently in the works. Their new single, Time Adds Up (If You’re Lucky), is already making its rounds—and we wanted the visuals to match the story in the sound. From group shots to individual portraits to detailed images of their instruments, it was a day full of personality, laughter, and unmistakable musical character.

One of the members proudly plays a McClanahan mandolin, and we made sure to give it the spotlight it deserved. And because no session with a band like this would be complete without a little fun, we even ventured into a 70s-inspired throwback room for a few relaxed shots that brought out the Ramblers’ playful side.

This was more than a photoshoot—it was a front-row seat to tradition in motion. I’m thankful and blessed to be a small part of this season with Joe and the guys. Can’t wait for y’all to see what’s coming next.
